Hello all. I am taking a trip to Baja this March and would appreciate any advice you have to offer. Specifically, my girlfriend and I will be driving my car south from Los Angeles the morning of Sunday, March 4.

In five days, I hope to take a relaxing road trip as far south as Punta Rosarito and back. I am not interested in touristy, gringo resorty areas, as Tijuana is and Ensenada seems to be.

I am more interested in desolate beaches, good Mexican food, fantastic scenery, and maybe a little shack on the side of the road that rents kayaks by the hour.

My basic questions are: Is this timeframe feasible? Where are some good places to eat/sleep? Do I in fact need a vehicle permit (some sites say no vehicle permit is needed in Baja; others say one is needed beyond the Tijuana-Ensenada border zone)?

Any other advice would also be appreciated. Oh, and I almost forgot: My girlfriend wants to swim with dolphins. How shall I best let her down gently?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Russell

Hello Russell,

Five days would really be pushing it to have a relaxing road trip. You would be looking at 10+ hour drive just to get down there. You will find that pretty much everything south of Ensenada is much different and less touristy than what you will find close to the border, so maybe a closer destination would work better. Punta Rosarito is pretty desolate, so I don't think you will find kayak rentals anywhere, but there are definitely dolphins there....so your girlfriend might get her wish. You do not need a vehicle permit for travel anywhere in Baja, but you will both need to get tourist cards. They cost around $20 and you can get them immediately after crossing into Tijuana at the immigration office on the right hand side of the street. Hope this is helpful!

anyone still planning a road trip, agree that 5 days is too short!

I also agree that 5 Days are too short for that kind of road trip.
As Geoff said It would 10+ Hours for just reaching there after that you spend one for relaxing right then approx. one and half day wasted from your 5 days and also you want one and half day to coming back from there so your 3 days are already wasted in just reaching there and coming back from there.
So only 2 days you can spend there 2 days are not so enough to travel there.

I even agree that 5 days is too short but i think it doesn't matter as long as you enjoy the travel very much.:)

It is possible to make it in 5 days, but as you wrote you hope to take a relaxing road trip,I would suggest to plan at least a couple of more days for the trip.
