Make sure you have a signed, valid passport and visas, if required. Also, before you go, fill in the emergency information page of your passport!
Read the Consular Information Sheets (and Public Announcements or Travel Warnings, if applicable) for the countries you plan to visit.
Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs of the countries to which you are traveling. Remember, the U.S. Constitution does not follow you! While in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws.
Make 2 copies of your passport identification page. This will facilitate replacement if your passport is lost or stolen. Leave one copy at home with friends or relatives. Carry the other with you in a separate place from your passport.
Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends at home so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.

Since you're planning a surf trip and you don't want to spend all your time driving around looking for waves, make sure to pick up a Surf Map before you hit the road, too. You can get them at SurfMaps.com.

We just spent two weeks driving through Baja, surfing, kitesurfing, and stand up paddle surfing all the way down. It was a great trip and we met some Australians who purchased the Baja Surf Map Set and were surfing all the breaks from TJ to Cabo. They said it was really useful and were stoked they had it.

Snorkerlers should be wearing any of these ?rash guard, wetsuit, sunblock and lotions? from preventing discomfort of skin and water creatures.

Gloves will be helpful if you hold anything in the bottom.

Consult your physician if you have any breathing problems

Make sure you have someone watching above the sea level for emergency.

Have fun.

Basic tips but very very useful and must be followed at any cost. The last one you listed is really necessary because incidents can happen with anyone.

Yes the most important part is to make at least two copies of the passport and visa and keep one copy of that we your cousins in your home town. If in cas you lost your passport or visa you can get that back from home for emergency purpose.

Nice tips. But I will also pack a few travel guides for wherever you are going...i do not want to miss out on the main places.

Useful tips anyway. But i would like to add also you should take precautions to avoid being a target of crime. Do not wear conspicuous clothing or jewelry and do not carry excessive amounts of money. Also, do not leave unattended luggage in public areas and do not accept packages from strangers.

and btw, Check to see if your medical insurance covers you overseas. If not, then consider supplemental insurance.
