In April my wife, 9 month old son and I took a road trip down to Puerto Vallarta. It was a long drive - about 1200 miles but worth it! On the first leg we went from Tucson to San Carlos and stayed on Catch 22 beach at the Premier Vacation Club- a place we highly recommend. Then from San Carlos/Guaymas to Mazatlan where we stayed in the Zona Dorada at the Hotel Playa Mazatlan. Then from Mazatlan we drove to Puerto Vallarta. Up until this point the road was very good - 4 lane, well-maintained, and expensive (I imagine we spent almost $100 USD on the tolls). From Mazatlan south to Vallarta, the road becomes two lane and very slow especially when driving behind a whole convoy of slow moving semis. Puerto Vallarta was beautiful, although we liked the quaintness of the Mazatlan's old town the best.
A well recommended journey, and doable even with a small child!
