Believe it or not, my favorite spot in Baja is not a tourist town, but a very quaint, little French/Mexican town on coast of the Sea of Cortez called Santa Rosalia. There are lots of "Santa Rosalias" in Mexico so, if you're looking it up on a map, it's the one that's located near Mulege in Baja California Sur.

Here's why I love it so:

Unlike many other towns along the Baja Peninsula, Santa Rosalia was founded during the French ocupation of Mexico and still maintains a very European atmosphere: Many streets are paved with cobblestone, there are wonderful bakeries and side-walk cafes, the buildings are mostly made of wood (very unusual for Mexico), gorgeous bouganvilla everywhere, and there is a beautiful church in the middle of town that was actually designed by Gustaf Eifel (Eifel Tower...).

The reason it's not touristy is because even though it is on sea of cortez, it doesn't have a sandy beach. Most tourists who come to Baja like to go where there's miles of sandy beach to lie on (like the Corona commercials).

It's a bustling little town that is filled with local people walking the sidewalks of the cobblestoned streets shopping, having lunch, or on their front porches visiting with neighbors. Hundreds of school children in neatly pressed uniforms dart about happily while mexican music from an unknown source echos through the canyon. If you go during the fall, you're likely to have fantastic weather too.

There is a ferry that goes over to Guaymas on the mainland in case you feel like like getting in a little urban activity as well. And just down the road about 20 KM is the very touristy town of Mulege which DOES have the sandy beaches, as well as fine dining, camping, etc.

So that's my personal recommendation. I would much rather go to Santa Rosalia than to some "Disneylanified" tourist trap like Cabo or PV. You get a much more authentic experience of Mexico - especially Baja. :)

Looks more like kids practicing on their computers... What is Baja California, you ask? Go to www.wikipedia.com (http://www.wikipedia.com) Then when you want to see some of what Baja has, I have a index of links to my photos taken at various places in Baja: http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/tours This link is also on my web site http://vivabaja.com designed to help folks explore Baja!

The Baja area is about 760 miles long and only 30m wide in some places. There are colourful deserts, endless beaches and incredible marine life. Go to Baja and choose between activities such as horse riding, whale watching, kayaking, fishing, diving, golf, carnivals and fiestas, and cultural wonders shouldn’t cease to amaze. Baja is well known as great place for surfing.
