I've been going into Baja for quite some time now and have never been asked for a tourist card.........ever, either on or off road. When flying to Cabo the airlines make it available during the flight. I probably paid for it in the airfare.

Now, I feel it is probably prudent........conditions withstanding.....and we're heading down to Colonet and down further to San Ignatio this trip
for four or five days.

Are baja tourist cards available before I cross the border in Orange Co?
Huntington Beach? Or, near the border on the US side? I'm not a AAA
member..... too costly.

I don't particularly like hanging around the Tijuana border......the traffic
is sketchy and parking is not good. I like to get on the toll road as fast as possible.

Hey HBLARRY,

The easiest way to get a tourist card is at the immigration office when you cross the border. The office is on the right side of the street and there is plenty of parking available. You will pay the fee for the tourist card at the Banjercito (bank) window and then bring your receipt to the immigration office where they will do the paperwork. The Tijuana office is open 24/7. Getting a card in advance is more expensive, and you still have to stop to get the document stamped at the immigration office, so it is not a time savings either.

Hope this helps! Have a great trip!

Geoff,
So, if I obtain a tourist card at AAA or possibly through an immigration office in let's say; Santa Ana or San Diego and I fill it out properly, when I stop at the border in Tijuana I would be charged for the stamp or signature?

If the immigration office is open 24/7, how about the bank hours and it's location ?
I have heard this is where problems arise..........

Hello HBLarry,

My understanding is that if you get a tourist card in advance and fill it out, you still must stop to get it stamped to make it valid.....but you should only have to pay once....

The Banjercito and immigration office are right next to each other at the border and both are supposed to be open 24/7. I have heard of people going really early in the morning and having difficulty because the staff are sleeping inside.

The scoop is since you have to validate the card anyway (when you enter Mexico), there is not much reason to take the time to get a PRE PAID card before your trip.

The bank teller (not a full service bank) is open 24/7 just for taking the money for the card (about US$20) at the Tijuana Border... about 6 windows down from the INM office (the far right office facing the secondary parking area, just inside Mexico).

As you near the border, get into the far right lane (easiest if you use I-805 instead of I-5 southbound) which is signed 'Something to Declare'. You may not be declaring anything, but that is where you need to be to park in front of the INM office. Tell any agent that is what you are doing, getting a 'Tourist Card' (FM-T).

Have your passport and a pen (if there are others the one pen may be not available)... Other proof of citizenship with a photo ID is fine for North Americans, but if you are European... have the passport. Check with U.S. customs before your trip to see what is required for you to re-enter the U.S.... if you can even make a detour trip into Mexico while you are here.

You fill the card and can put up to 180 days, and the furthest south in Mexico you could go (as this is a reusable land crossing FM-T for future trips in the 180 days) since the cost is the same for any period more than 7 days... 7 days or less is FREE. Flying into Mexico requires a new FM-T for each trip... included in the price of the ticket.

If over 7 days, take the tourist card a few windows down to the special bank teller and pay... return to the INM office for the final stamp... THAT'S IT... Takes just a few minutes, unless busy.

The only place the card is asked for is at the state border near Guerrero Negro (Eagle Monument).

I think you can easily get tourist card from immigration offices. They are always ready to help you in any way. And yeah it will also save you a lot of time.

tourist and visa cards are hard to get when you lack requirements, there are some place in the world where there is travel ban, so you need to confirm first on your travel agent.

The Tourist Card (FMM) is available at the border in the INM office facing the secondary inspection area... this is at the Tijuana Border Crossing and is open 24/7.

If your visit to Mexico is for 7 days or less, a free FMM is available. If you would need one for over 7 days (to the maximum of 180 days), they are approx. US$23. A bank teller for payment is located a few offices down from INM in the same building... also open 24/7.

Tourist cards may be obtained north of the border, but they MUST be validated (stamped) when you enter Mexico. So, one must still stop at the INM office to have it stamped... which takes away the advantge of pre-buying an FMM to avoid stopping in Tijuana.
